IXth ANNUAL CONFERENCE
OF THE RUSSIAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

Dear colleagues!

We warmly invited you to attend the IXth Annual Conference of the Russian Library Association to be held in Novosibirsk on May 17-23, 2004.

Novosibirsk is the largest city of Siberia and the Far East, which is situated ashore excellent Siberian river Ob’. The city is known in Russia and beyond of its borders as one of the leading research, cultural, university and industrial centers. It was announced “Library capital of Russia - 2004”.

The Annual Conference of the Russian Library Association is held with support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Representative of the President of Russian Federation in Siberian Federal Region, Novosibirsk Regional Government and City-Hall of Novosibirsk.

The theme of the Conference is: «Libraries is the Heart of Information Society».

Professional program of the IXth RLA Annual Conference the following topics for presentations and discussions at sections, round tables workshops, and other events are envisaged.

In the basis of professional discussion the documents of World Summit on the Information Society (2003—2005) were laid:

• Library in Democratic and Civil Society
• Information for All: Role of Library
• Modern Information Computer Technologies and Libraries
• Library in Modern Information and Communication Infrastructure
• From the Information society — to the Society of Knowledge
• Resource potential of the library and its availability
• Public trust to library
• Enabling library environment
• Lifelong library
• Library as a center of lifelong education
• Cultural diversity and cultural identity, linguistic diversity in libraries
• Library and Media
• Ethical dimensions of library work
• International library collaboration

Different sections and round tables will discuss their organizational and other questions at Standing Committees’ meetings. Sessions of 35 sections and round tables of RLA will be held on the basis of Novosibirsk libraries, so you will be able to acquaint with the work of these libraries.

The Conference will be accompanied by the Exhibition of printed output, new information technologies, products, goods and services.

Submitting Conference Papers

Only papers, speeches and presentations announced before March 15^th, 2004 will be included into the Conference Program (e-mail: rba@nlr.ru).

The Organizing Committee seeks original and application oriented papers, not previously presented elsewhere and which correspond to the conference theme and topics.

Plenary and keynote papers - up to 20 minutes, at sections and round tables meetings – up to 15 minutes, communications – up to 7 minutes.

Registration fee covers:

• Participation in the Conference, including visits to social and cultural events and to the Exhibition;
• Participant’s information package with the Conference Program, the Exhibition Catalogue, new information publications and materials
